8+ min ago (312+ words) By SOPHIE AUSTIN and CHRISTOPHER WEBER "It's heartbreaking," said Heather Brent, a spokesperson for the San Joaquin County sheriff's office. She said investigators believe it was a "targeted incident" at a banquet hall where 100 people or more had gathered Saturday night. Brent said the deceased were ages 8, 9, 14 and 21. Eleven people were also wounded. No one was in custody by Sunday afternoon, and she did not elaborate on why authorities believe it was intentional or who might have been targeted. She said she could not release information about a motive or details about a suspect, noting that it might hinder the investigation. "Finding the person or persons who committed this crime is the No. 1 priority," Brent said. Faith leaders in Stockton were planning an afternoon vigil to honor the dead and pray for the wounded. 49+ min ago (162+ words) LOS ANGELES " Lakers star LeBron James and reserve guard Marcus Smart won't be available for tonight's home game against the New Orleans Pelicans. James was ruled out of Sunday's game because of left foot injury management. The four-time league MVP was sidelined for the season's first 14 games because of sciatica on his right side. James, 40, has dealt with left foot ailments over the last few seasons. James averaged 16.5 points, 8.3 assists, five rebounds and one steal in the four games he's played since making his season debut in the Nov. 18 home win over the Utah Jazz, with the Lakers winning all four games he's played. Smart will miss his second consecutive game because of back spasms after sitting out of Friday's home win over the Dallas Mavericks. Clippers at a loss for solutions to ongoing struggles
58+ min ago (546+ words) INGLEWOOD "Clippers coach Tyronn Lue clearly is out of answers. He doesn't know how to stop the team from spiraling completely out of control, having tried everything at his disposal. After losing to the Dallas Mavericks on the heels of a loss to the Memphis Grizzlies, Lue said there are "no new steps right now" to be taken. He's tried everything, leaving the Clippers to retrace the downward-heading steps that have led them to a 5-15 record. There have been different rotations, different starters, different points of attack, all performed with the same depleted roster, empty bench and aging players, a fact that hasn't escaped Lue and the rest of the coaching staff. "We've tried a lot of different things, so we'll keep trying," Lue said. Lue continues to believe the team's problems are fixable and the season can be salvaged....

USC football wants to use ‘very, very important year’ to pave its own future
1+ hour, 34+ min ago (605+ words) LOS ANGELES " The theme within the USC football team in the week leading up to Saturday's UCLA game was "paving the road." Head coach Lincoln Riley encouraged his players to ruminate on what they are doing to prepare the Trojans for the future, and how this season can be a building block. Quarterback Jayden Maiava put it simply: "We still ain't (expletive)," he told reporters after the game. The team seems to be celebrating this regular season, which ended with a 29-10 win over the Bruins, as well as accepting it as a building block. Players are viewing the road ahead through their own lenses, and all paths are under construction. Roughly 30 players walked in the Senior Day ceremony prior to playing the Bruins. Some, like linebacker Eric Gentry, were out of eligibility and others, like safety Kamari Ramsey, are getting…...

Rams fold under weight of own mistakes in loss to Panthers
2+ hour, 51+ min ago (534+ words) CHARLOTTE, N.C. " When a kickoff return to midfield and an unnecessary roughness penalty put the Rams at the Carolina Panthers 35 to open Sunday's game, and when the Rams converted that short field into yet another Davante Adams touchdown, it looked like the Rams were on their way to another easy victory. Then, two dropbacks later, Stafford was intercepted again, this one returned by Mike Jackson. All of a sudden, the Rams found themselves trailing for the first time since Week 6, and in what would prove to be a 10-round heavyweight bout. Two ties, five lead changes and, in the end, too many mistakes for the Rams (9-3) to overcome as their six-game winning streak came to an end in a 31-28 loss. Even after the two interceptions, even after allowing the Panthers (7-6) to run 4.5 yards per carry and convert 10 of 17 attempts on third…...
Suspect in National Guard attack struggled with ‘dark isolation’ as community raised concerns
3+ hour, 13+ min ago (462+ words) West Virginia National Guard Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, 20, was killed in the shooting, and Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, 24, was critically wounded. Lakanwal, 29, has been charged with first-degree murder. In Afghanistan, Lakanwal worked in a special Afghan Army unit known as a Zero Unit. The units were backed by the CIA. He entered the United States in 2021 through Operation Allies Welcome, a program that evacuated and resettled tens of thousands of Afghans after the American withdrawal. Many had worked alongside U.S. troops and diplomats. Lakanwal resettled with his wife and their five sons, all under the age of 12, in Bellingham, Washington, but struggled, according to the community member, who shared emails that had been sent to the U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants, a nonprofit group that provides services to refugees. "Rahmanullah has not been functional as a person, father and provider since March…...
